Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips free essay sample

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is a glorious achievement for The Flaming Lips. As they progressed through their music career, they began to experiment with their albums more and more. This is something that, in my opinion, led to their newest albums downfall. But I digress. Yoshimi is a very loose concept album. I say this because there are only four tracks on this record that tell a story, based on the title. The rest of the songs are completely unrelated to the first four, which is something that is very interesting, considering that most concept albums tell some sort of story to the listener. (Ex. Green Days American Idiot. ) Even so, this is a very impressive effort from The Flaming Lips, and it showcases their unique (and beautifully weird) musical talents. The first tune, Fight Test, depicts the female protagonist, Yoshimi, later described as a black belt in karate, battling against a dangerous foe to prepare herself for the Pink Robots. The second song, One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, is one that I found to be really intriguing and thought-provoking at the same time. It tells of a robot that is learning how to show emotions; how to be more than a machine. It is easily one of my favorites on this album, mainly because of the lyrics. Now, I simply must mention Parts 1 and 2 of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. They are both highly enjoyable, but personally, I like Part 2 much more. It features some cosmic-sounding instrumentals, and in between, there are several moments of inhuman screeching. It is truly bizarre, but I found it to be all that much more appealing because of it. My favorite tune would have to be All We Have is Now, which is truly a somber lyrical tale about a time-traveler that falls in love with someone, but then feels a heavy sense of regret for getting so close, because he knows that something bad will happen to them in the near future. That would clearly explain the title of the song. I just love how Wayne Coynes voice sounds through-out the whole thing. Its honestly one of the best aspects of it, and it makes it that much more powerful. All in all, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is quite an enjoyable album, thanks to The Flaming Lips ridiculously odd instrumentation choices and impressive lyrical content. Biography of Henry Avery, the Most Successful Pirate Henry â€Å"Long Ben† Avery (c 1659–1696 or 1699) was an English pirate, plying the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and making one big score: the treasure ship of the Grand Mughal of India. After this success, he retired. Little is known for certain of his ultimate fate. Contemporaries believed that Avery took his loot to Madagascar where he set himself up as a king with his own fleet and thousands of men. There also is evidence, however, that he returned to England and died broke. Some contemporary accounts spell his last name Every, while some references give his first name as John. He soon took to sea,  serving on several merchant vessels as well as ships of war, when England went to war with France in 1688, and a few slave ships. In early 1694, Avery took a position as the first mate aboard the privateer vessel Charles II, then in the employ of the king of Spain. The mostly English crew was extremely unhappy with their poor treatment and they convinced Avery to lead a mutiny, which he did on May 7, 1694. The men renamed the ship the Fancy and turned to piracy, attacking English and Dutch merchantmen off the coast of Africa. About this time, he released a statement declaring that English vessels had nothing to fear from him, as he would attack only foreigners, which clearly wasnt true. Madagascar The Fancy headed to Madagascar, then a lawless land known as a safe haven for pirates and a good place to launch attacks in the Indian Ocean. He restocked the Fancy and had it modified to be swifter under sail. This improved speed began paying dividends immediately, as he was able to overtake a French pirate vessel. After looting it, he welcomed 40 new pirates to his crew. Then he headed north, where other pirates were amassing, hoping to loot the Grand Mughal of Indias treasure fleet as it returned from an annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Indian Treasure Fleet In July 1695, the pirates got lucky: the great treasure fleet sailed into their arms. There were six pirate ships, including the Fancy and Thomas Tews Amity. They first attacked the Fateh Muhammed, the escort ship to the flagship, the Ganj-i-Sawai. The Fateh Muhammed, outgunned by the large pirate fleet, didnt put up much of a fight. There were 50,000 to 60,000 British pounds in treasure aboard the Fateh Muhammed. It was quite a haul, but it didnt go far divided among the crews of six vessels. The pirates were hungry for more. Soon Averys ship caught up with the Ganj-i-Sawai, the powerful flagship of Aurangzeb, the Mughal lord. It was a mighty ship, with 62 cannons and 400 to 500 musketeers, but the prize was too rich to ignore. During the first broadside they damaged the Ganj-i-Sawais main mast and one of the Indian cannons exploded, causing mayhem and confusion on deck. The battle roared on for hours as the pirates boarded the Ganj-i-Sawai. The terrified captain of the Mughal ship ran below decks and hid among the concubines. After a fierce battle, the remaining Indians surrendered. Looting and Torture The survivors were subjected to several days of torture and rape by the victorious pirates. There were many women on board, including a member of the court of the Grand Mughal. Romantic tales of the day say that the beautiful daughter of the Mughal was on board and fell in love with Avery and then ran off to live with him on a remote island, but the reality was probably far more brutal. The haul from the Ganj-i-Sawai was hundreds of thousands of pounds in gold, silver, and jewels, worth tens of millions of dollars today and possibly the richest haul in the history of piracy. Deception and Flight Avery and his men didnt want to share this prize with the other pirates, so they tricked them. They loaded their holds with loot and arranged to meet and divide it, but they took off instead. None of the other pirate captains had a chance of catching up with the speedy Fancy, which headed for the lawless Caribbean. Once they reached New Providence Island, Avery bribed Gov. Nicholas Trott, essentially buying protection for him and his men. The taking of the Indian ships had put a great strain on relations between India and England, however, and once a reward was put out for Avery and his fellow pirates, Trott could no longer protect them. He tipped them off, however, so Avery and most of his 113-man crew got out safely. Only 12 were captured. Averys crew split up. Some went to Charleston, some to Ireland and England, and some remained in the Caribbean. Avery himself vanished from history at this point, although according to Capt. Charles Johnson, one of the best sources of the time (and often thought to be a pseudonym for novelist Daniel Defoe), he returned with much of his loot to England only to be later swindled out of it, dying poor in perhaps 1696 or 1699, maybe in Devonshire County, England. Legacy Avery was a legend during his lifetime and for a while thereafter. He embodied the dream of all pirates to make a huge score and then retire, preferably with an adoring princess and a large pile of loot. The idea that Avery had managed to get away with that booty helped create the so-called Golden Age of Piracy as thousands of poor, abused European seamen tried to follow his example out of their misery. These reforms in the initial stages attracted a substantial amount of foreign private investments until 1993 when the foreign capital inflow started to go down. By the close of the year 1994, Mexico had currency crisis leaving the government with no option, but to ditch the fixed exchange rate and replace it with a floating exchange rate policy. The result of this was that Mexico’s currency went down by about 50% within a period of six months, leading the country to deep recession. The currency (Peso) was floated because there was overspending in the economy which generated a substantial currency deficit, the government had no sufficient reserves yet it had accumulated high levels of debt, and the banking system was overexposed. After 1994 devaluation, President Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico took several measures to restructure the economy and reduce the effects of the currency crisis on the disadvantaged sectors of the economy. The main aim here was to create conditions for econ omic growth and adjust the economy within a short span of time. The IMF and the United States came to the aid of the government pooling together a financial support of 50 billion dollars. The Zedillo Administration adopted tighter monetary and fiscal policies to counter inflation and cushion some costs of the crisis in the banking sector. The plan entailed an increase in the VAT, cutting down budgets, increase in the price of gasoline and electricity and the decrease in government subsidies. The peso depreciation through the end of the 1990s led to increasing in exports and was of benefit to the export sector. â€Å"Great Expectations† has been described as the story of a â€Å"snob’s progress†. In the light of this comment, describe Pip’s development in the novel. Refer to the changes in the way he behaves and talks, the reactions of other characters in the novel and the reasons why he normally retains the reader’s sympathy.  In â€Å"Great Expectations†, Pip’s character goes through many changes. His morals and outlook on life are both greatly affected by his lifestyle, and his view of other characters is changed by his experiences and surroundings. At the beginning of â€Å"Great Expectations†, we see Pip as a very young child, living in fear of his sister, Mrs Joe Gargery. Joe is described in much the same way, which shows how he is childish at heart. We are told that Pip also sees this in chapter 2, when he tells us â€Å"I always treated him as a larger species of child†. Pip and Joe both live in fear of Mrs Joe’s regular â€Å"Ram-pages†, and her wax coated cane, Tickler. Although Pip and Joe obviously fear Tickler, Pip never really speaks of his fear in the book. It is seen more as a part of his life than a painful experience. For example, when Pip arrives home late after his encounter with Magwitch and learns of Mrs Joe’s â€Å"Ram-page†, he is told by Joe that â€Å"Which is worse, she’s got Tickler with her†. Instead of showing fear, we are simply told that â€Å"At this dismal intelligence, I twisted the only button on my waistcoat round and round, and looked in great depression at the fire† Mrs Joe’s treatment of Pip is mimicked by Uncle Pumblechook, who seems to be fully supportive of her complaints against Pip – mainly that he exists and that she has to look after him. At the start of the book, Pumblechook is very nasty to Pip, and is also fully supported by the Hubbles (at Christmas dinner) and Mr Wopsle. The main topic of conversation (apart from pork) is how ungrateful Pip is. This is brought up first by Pumblechook, who says â€Å"be grateful, boy, to them which brought you up by hand.†. This is then backed by Mrs Hubble, who adds â€Å"†Why is it that the young are never grateful?†. This conversation continues for some time, which cause Pip to remain silent and sink into his chair. These two examples show that in the first section of the book, Pip is afraid of his surroundings. He keeps quiet and tries to stay away from company (except Joe) to avoid punishment. Joe is Pip’s only friend, and makes up for the absence of other children in his life. Pip is happy talking to Joe, unlike Mrs Joe and her circle of friends.  Pip meets two other main characters in the first part of the book, and they are Miss Havisham and Estella. These are two of the most important characters in â€Å"Great Expectations†, and Dickens develops their characters a lot. Upon Pip’s first meeting with Miss Havisham, he is afraid of her, but it is not the same kind of fear as he has for Mrs Joe. He fears Mrs Joe as he fears Tickler, and does not want to be punished. However, he is afraid of Miss Havisham because she is strange and twisted. Pip does not understand her, and does not know what she is capable of, or what she could do to him. He speaks of her as a â€Å"ghost†, and sees many disturbing sights inside Satis House, such as the infested wedding feast and the stopped clocks. Pip tells us of his terror at his first sight of Miss Havisham. She can see his fear, and asks him â€Å"You are not afraid of a woman who has never seen the sun since you were born?†. We are then told that â€Å"I regret to state that I was not afraid of telling the enormous lie comprehended in the answer â€Å"No.†Ã¢â‚¬  As the book progresses, Pip comes to realise that there is nothing to be afraid of in Miss Havisham. By the end of the book he is happy to confront, criticise and even insult her. Pip also misinterprets Estella’s character. He falls in love with her the first time he sees her, even though he is only seven years old. This is obviously what Miss Havisham was trying to achieve, as she is continually quizzing Pip on his thoughts about Estella, and one of the first things she asks him is â€Å"What do you think of her?†. Pip, after some hesitation, replies that he thinks she is â€Å"proud† and â€Å"rude† but also â€Å"pretty†. Pip says little to Estella herself, but once he has left Satis House he is totally obsessed by Estella. This leads us onto a sudden change in Pip’s character.
